(Producer) This program discusses the application and contributions of electronmicroscopy to the study of both normal and pathological muscle. It reviews the technique of obtaining a sample of muscle for study with the electronmicroscope and discusses normal muscle ultrastructure and function. The program reviews pathological changes in muscle discernible at the ultrastructure level and mentions a few newer applications of electronmicroscopy to the study of neuromuscular diseases.
This video focuses on the application of electro-microscopy to study the skeletal muscle. This tool has been essential to basic understanding of skeletal muscle diseases. The study of microscopy for both technical and pathological muscle is also included. The video then offers definitions and examples of terminology of the skeletal muscle, as well as differences between normal and unhealthy skeletal muscle. Any change in the skeletal muscle must be prevalent throughout the entire biopsy to be ruled as abnormal.
