Heidelberger's son Charles (1920-1983) was a leading oncologist who introduced fluorouracil as a chemotherapeutic agent against certain cancers and made important findings in the study of carcinogenesis. He taught at the McArdle Cancer Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin 28 years before becoming director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Southern California.
