In this speech, Koop endorsed Alabama Congressman Albert Lee Smith in his unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U.S. Senate, citing Smith's support of religious schools and of voluntary school prayer, as well as his opposition to abortion and homosexuality. Revealing his own political creed, Koop stated that "[i]t is impossible to separate the religious conviction of an individual from his political beliefs."
