Lederberg transcribed these "handwritten scribbles" (as he called them) in 2000. Lederberg's address angered several members of the student body, alumni, and trustees of the medical college when he appeared to talk only to the medical college and otherwise ignored and disparaged the graduating classes of the University's School of Nursing (the school's last class in fact) and School of Medical Sciences who were also in attendance. Lederberg was deeply apologetic afterward saying that his words were misconstrued and until he arrived on campus, was unaware that he would be speaking to all the graduating classes and that it was the final class for the nursing school.
