Although team-based models of behavioral health care are widespread, reimbursement gaps remain common, making sustainable funding difficult; federal and state funding remain critical to many team-based models. Fee-for-service generally limits reimbursement to direct care provision and is a commonly cited barrier to reimbursement for team-based behavioral health care, which often includes activities outside of direct care. Many team-based models use alternative reimbursement mechanisms to sustainably reimburse for team-based care.
