Competency-based education (CBE) is a developing approach to health professions education. The AAMC has a long history with CBE and defining the fundamentals for practicing in an increasingly complex health care system. Over the past 20 years, medical education has improved in many ways, including in how outcomes such as competencies are defined and used to guide teaching and learning. To support this kind of positive change, we offer the New and Emerging Areas in Medicine Series. The series frames competencies across the undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education continuum. This report includes an introduction to CBE and competencies in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), including the historical context and importance of developing competence in this area and tactics for integrating this essential educational focus into the curriculum. Details about the development process and a glossary of terms are included as appendixes.
