Research has found that women* of reproductive age (15 to 44) with substance use disorder (SUD) have lower rates of contraceptive use and higher rates of unintended pregnancy than women without SUD. Understanding the barriers to reproductive health care faced by these women is essential to meeting their health needs. In this study, we assess the reproductive health care access and needs of women in treatment for SUD through case studies conducted in Maryland and Ohio in December 2019 and January 2020, respectively. In both states, we interviewed key informants, including state Medicaid officials, policymakers, researchers, and health care and other service providers, and conducted focus groups with women of reproductive age in treatment for SUD.
