This brief provides an overview of changes made to annual federal surveys due to the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic. Such changes included adapting, changing, and/or delaying survey field operations; adding questions to and/or modifying existing survey questionnaires; and understanding and addressing falling survey response rates. The brief examines four major surveys--the American Community Survey (ACS), Current Population Survey (CPS), Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), and the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)--in order to understand the breadth of COVID’s impact on 2020 federal survey data.
