Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program, provides health coverage for millions of Californians with low incomes. Over the past decade, the proportion of those enrollees who receive Medi-Cal benefits through managed care plans has increased. Beginning in 2021, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), which administers the Medi-Cal program, will engage in a reprocurement process for all commercial managed care plans. This brief explains what that reprocurement process is and what it means for the future of Medi-Cal managed care and the people it serves.
