The Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Programs incentivized hospitals to provide patients access to their health information through the use of certified EHR technology. Since 2014, eligible hospitals were required to provide patients with the capability to view, download, and transmit (VDT) their health information. VDT capability provides patients with electronic access to their personal health information. Other electronic patient engagement capabilities allow hospitals and their patients to interact online. This data brief explores the trends and variation in hospitals' adoption of VDT and other electronic patient engagement capabilities.
