Abstract:
(Producer) This package is designed for undergraduate medical and nursing students, residents, all emergency room staff, psychologists, social workers, paramedics, EMT's, and other professionals involved in the delivery of mental health services. After viewing the videotape and discussing its contents, the viewer should be able to identify several important symptoms and signs relevant to the assessment of each patient; be able to assess the examiner's technique, identifyingstrenghts and weaknesses in the approach to each patient and suggest alternatives; and experience greater comfort with psychiatric patients in an emergency setting. This videotape and instructional guide are designed to be used in a groupsetting with an instructor. The content is not a comprehensive presentation of emergency psychiatry but a stimulus to discussion. Although designed for presentation to pre-clinical students, this package can also be used with advanced audiences. The five case vignettes can be used together to provide an overview, or separately in teaching specific problems. Suggested discussion points have been built into the videotape. We recommend that at each of these points the videoplayer be stopped and the questions discussed. The five cases demonstrate: the inaccessible patient, the violent patient, the anxious patient, the depressed patient, and the psychotic patient.
