Abstract:
(Producer) This program demonstrates the procedure for doing a vaginal and rectal examination. The presentation begins with the patient being assisted into the lithotomy position and draped. Explanation of each step and monitoring for facial expression and muscle tension are stressed throughout. A graphic sequence shows the relationship of the internal structures. Proper insertion of the speculum is shown and an example of the vagina of a patient with a total hysterectomy is included. Intravaginal palpation is demonstrated, followed by another graphic sequence to illustrate the relationship of the structures involved in the rectovaginal and rectal examination. After reexamination of the uterus, the anus and rectum are examined with attention to sphincter tone during palpation.
