Abstract:
(Critical) This program documents a religious service in a fundamentalist, economically deprived coal mining community in West Virginia. Analogies are drawn to primitive religious rites and the religion's function as an emotional outlet is discussed. Neither ramifications on mental illness nor the problems of delivering mental health care to this population are considered. Some aspects of psycho- and social-dynamics of developing a state of individual and group excitement are presented. The technical quality is deficient; some sections are too long; the visualization is poor; the commentary monotonous and superficial. The importance of religion in the lives of these people is emphasized, without drawing any conclusions; the discussion is more observational than instructional. The program is recommended for limited use only.
