Abstract:
(Critical) This program describes the light microscope appearance of skeletal muscle and compares it with ultrastructural features of skeletal muscle. The program errs in describing only the longitudinal sections of skeletal muscle, primarily as a basis for understanding the ultrastructure of the banding pattern. The section dealing with this is very well done but should not be included in tape entitled "Light Microscope". The time would have been more appropriately used describing the light microscopy of skeletal muscle on cross-section and with a special connective tissue stain. The use of diagrams and actual specimens simultaneously on a split screen is very effective; however, several episodes and searching sequences are out of focus. The audio quality is impaired by distracting paper shuffling throughout the entire tape. The program is considered worthwhile, if somewhat inadequate, and recommended with reservations.
