Abstract:
(Critical) This program presents the principles and mechanisms of intestinal transport. It relates effectively basic concepts and research findings with issues of clinical medicine. The presentation is lucid and consistent. It probably serves best as material to supplement lecture and textbook readings. It is highly recommended. and This videotape, hosted by Don Powell, is designed to acquaint the viewer with the principles involved in mammalian intestinal transport. This will equip a physician with an understanding of the intestine's role in acid/base balance and the regulation of salt and water transport at the cellular level. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract, in addition to its function of digestion and absorption of nutrients, plays a significant role in maintaining the water and electrolyte balance of the body. The presentation uses a laboratory experiment to illustrate the mechanisms and principles of intestinal transport and how the epithelium responds to certain chemical substances. Additionally, an explanation is given for electrical potential differences.
