Abstract:
(Critical) As part of a series on "Infant at High Risk" this program reviews the underlying pathophysiology of the respiratory distress syndrome in the newborn, explains factors predisposing to its occurrence, illustrates the clinical and X-ray findings in the disease and spells out treatments objectives. Special procedures involved in treatment such as placement of umbilical catheters and application of continuous positive airway pressure are demonstrated. The major complications of the disease (pneumothorax, interventricular hemorrhage) and of treatment (retrolental fibroplasia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia) are mentioned in a somewhat superficial fashion. The program is comprehensive and well done. One missesa better statement of objectives and integration of self-instructional elements within the program, both important to comprehend this rather difficult presentation. The program should provide stimulating experience for medical students and should also serve as a useful review for residents and as a treatment guide for nurses and practitioners. It is recommended.
