Abstract:
(Critical) This program presents an excellent and lucid discussion of the sella turcica and its environs. Radiographs, diagrams and a skeleton are used to present normal anatomy and development. The program concentrates on radiographic evaluation of the area and differentiation of normal variations from pathological processes. Abnormalities covered include craniopharyngiomas, optic gliomas, hydrocephalus, and meningiomas. A method for the measurement of sella size is demonstrated. Increased size of the sella is presented as being caused by mass lesions and extrinsic changes, primarily increased intracranial pressure. Pituitary tumors, especially chromophobe adenomas, are emphasized as a cause of increased intracranial pressure. The program concludes with consideration of the dorsum sella.
