- This program presents excerpts from interviews from the series "Leaders in American Medicine." During these segments various physicians discuss certain aspects of medical education. The physicians presented discuss the following topics: W. Barry Wood, Jr., M.D., the importance of the teacher doing research; Walsh McDermott, M.D., the extraction of information and its application in a given situation; Shields Warren, M.D., the role of autopsy; Joseph T. Wearn, M.D. and T. Hale Ham, examinations and evaluation of medical students; Karl F. Meyer, M.D., the great satisfaction derived from teaching; Maxwell M. Wintrobe, M.D., clinical aspects of teaching; Lester R. Dragstedt, M.D., the interaction between teacher and the student, who in turn teaches the instructor; Charles B. Huggins, M.D., the mystique of Harvard Medical School; Owen H. Wangensteen, M.D., the importance of providing a historical orientation; Grace A. Goldsmith, M.D., integration of nutrition into various clinical subjects; George L. Engle, M.D., the importance of emphasizing the clinical aspects of medicine; Matthew Walker, M.D., the responsibility of the instructor for the student's success or failure; and T. R. Harrison, M.D., the importance of listening to what the patient has to say and avoiding placing too much emphasis on laboratory tests.
