The purpose of this presentation is to describe and demonstrate the method being used by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine to educate medical students in the area of human sexuality. This objective is achieved with the aid of medical students, their instructors and an excerpt from the program "Rich and Judy." The program stresses the importance of the proper selection of sex educators, and the team concept using both male and female educators. In this presentation a patient is shown discussing a sexual problem with her physician who becomes embarrassed and evasive. The program then explores the problems faced by members of the medical community today who are asked for advice and guidance in an area in which they feel inadequate and uneducated. The Sex Knowledge and Attitude Test (SKAT) is described, and information compiled from this test is discussed. The program stresses that the first step in sex education is attitude modification. The goals of attitude modification are discussed and methods used to achieve this modification are demonstrated. These include verbal confrontation and visual confrontation. The students describe their own feelings and the atmosphere in their homes with the team leaders. Effective training techniques which are used include role playing and the observation of an interview with the female patient and therapist is then demonstrated. The program closes with a review of what the educators feel is important for medical educators to note in viewing this film.
