In this letter, Osler told Barker (unofficially) that he had been chosen to succeed Osler as Professor of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief at Johns Hopkins. He also expressed his concern that Dr. William S. Thayer, his assistant and closest protégé at Hopkins, had been passed over for the job, and asked Barker to help make him comfortable.
