This photo was probably taken for an article in the Baylor Line, March-April 1955, titled "A Stitch in Time." One of DeBakey's most important surgical innovations was the Dacron vascular graft, which he developed in the early 1950s. The synthetic fabric grafts replaced sections of blood vessels damaged by aneurysms, especially in the aorta. The graft to DeBakey's left would be used in the lower abdominal aorta, where it divides to form the femoral arteries (a common site of aneurysm formation.)
