Dr. DeBakey went on several trips to the Middle East as a goodwill ambassador, surgeon, and special consultant to the United States Surgeon General. His most famous trip to Egypt occurred in 1980, where he performed a splenectomy on the recently exiled Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. Prior to the surgery, DeBakey had been awarded the Merit Order of the Arab Republic First Class.
