In the early 1940s, Dr. DeBakey was investigating the surgical treatment of heart disease and lung cancer. After the United States entered World War II, he also became involved with problems in battlefield surgery, including blood banking. See, for example, his articles "The Surgical Treatment of Coronary Disease," "Primary Pulmonary Malignancy: Treatment by Total Pneumonectomy," "Bronchoscopic Aspects of Early Bronchiectasis," "The Management of Chest Wounds: Collective Review," and "The Plasma Bank."
