The New Orleans Charity Hospital was founded as the Hospital of Saint John or L'Hopital des Pauvres de la Charite (Hospital for the Poor) by French sailor and shipbuilder Jean Louis in 1736. It is dedicated to serving the poor and uninsured. Michael DeBakey served his internship and first surgical residency at the Charity Hospital, where he worked with Dr. Alton Ochsner, his professor and future collaborator. It is also where he met his first wife, Diana. When he left New Orleans (Tulane) for Baylor University, he founded a surgical residency program at the local charity hospital in Houston.
