Gorman reflected on the ways in which psychiatrists in private practice and at private psychiatric institutions had, historically, been advocates for humane and competent treatment of the mentally ill. He urged his audience at the National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals' 31st Annual Meeting to continue in this role, and help to end insurance carriers' discrimination against those suffering from mental illness.
