- Single proof on laid paper, apart from the edition of 60 in this state. One of 19 prints from Beckmann's portfolio, "Gesichter" (Faces). In the print, 6 distorted figures are shown blowing horns, each with an unhappy or crazed expression. Beckmann's figures, drawn with dramatic angles and exaggerated facial features, depict the physical and emotional impact of World War I on himself, and those that Beckmann knew. "In the print he wears merely an eyepatch [and] can be explained either as artistic license or by the fact that the portrait occurs after operations he was undergoing to repair his damaged face. Possibly the setting is the "Hotel Lo??w," actually a private infirmary for officers operated by an elderly "Herr Lo??w," who had become rich in Argentina. If this is the case than probably the female at center is Vera, the daughter of Mr. Lo??w, and the elderly female at foreground is his servant, who introduced Miss von Braunbehrens to the Hotel Lo??w. The male with moustache who stands in profile recollects Major von Braunbehrens, the father of Lili von Braunbehrens. The males at left and at right background probably would be officers recuperating at the infirmary." -- Max Beckmann's Catalogue Raisonne??.
