Abstract:
Dr. Paul Brand discusses the mechanics and anatomy that control movement of the hand. The first part focuses on the muscles of the forearm and hand, what they are called and where they are located. A forearm laid open is shown and Dr. Brand points out components and patterns. Brand then discusses the transmission of energy from muscles to control the joints and tendons of the hand, with a pulley and lever-type of system. He explains how damaged tendons can be surgically replaced with tendons from another part of the body, or also mentions the newer science of tendons transplanted from a donor.
