Abstract:
Briefly discusses the advancement of science over the centuries, gives a history of leprosy as it was observed in ancient societies, and explains that today it is curable, and that sufferers need not be isolated and stigmatized. The video profiles places where people have been quarantined due to infection with leprosy, including an area in Peru where police removed residents to a remote area where they had to use separate money, could not send out mail, and had other restrictions. The manifestations of leprosy on the skin, in eyes, and on the nerves is mentioned. Treatment of wounds is demonstrated, since feet and hands are affected by loss of sensation and are easily injured. Drugs used to treat the disease are described, as well as the doctors' concerns that some leprosy bacteria are becoming resistant.
