In this report Heidelberger sums up ten years of research in immunology in his laboratory supported by the Harkness Research Fund, a half-million dollar endowment established in 1928 by Edward S. Harkness, a benefactor of Columbia University's new medical center, which opened that year. Proceeds from the fund went entirely to support Heidelberger's research, and freed him from the need to apply for research grants.
