After giving an exhaustive survey of the immunochemical literature since Paul Ehrlich and Jules Bordet, Heidelberger in this survey article offered a detailed description of his development of the quantitative precipitin method, which for the first time allowed the accurate measurement of the absolute weight of even minute quantities of specific polysaccharides and of proteins in immune precipitates.
