Walter W. Palmer (d. 1950), head of the Department of Medicine at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, first met Heidelberger when both were working in the laboratory of Van Slyke at the Rockefeller Institute in 1922, and in 1929 offered him a position in his department at Columbia. Heidelberger credited Palmer with creating a congenial atmosphere in the department in which his research could thrive.. NOTE: Original image is crooked.
