In this letter Haurowitz discussed his and Heidelberger's research on complement, a complex system of over twenty serum proteins that play an essential enzymatic role in host defense mechanisms against invading organisms. The letter also highlights the dislocations in science brought on by World War II, including the forced emigration of scientists (Haurowitz fled his native Czechoslovakia for neutral Turkey during the war) and the difficulty of obtaining international scientific literature.
