The Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences, was chartered in 1970 to provide expert surveys and advice on issues of health and science policy to government, the corporate sector, the professions and the public. In 1974, Fredrickson was named the Institute's second director. He left after one year to become the director of the National Institutes of Health.
