Sawyer became director of the State Hygienic Laboratory in Berkeley in 1910. He and his staff were responsible for tracing disease epidemics and halting their spread when possible. Here they posed together after tracking down the source of a typhoid epidemic in Hanford. Sawyer is fourth from right in photo. The caption on the back of the photograph reads "'Clean-up Squad,' Hanford, Cal. April 16, 1914. (Typhoid epidemic due to a carrier.)"
