Dr. Sawyer's diary notes provide a good picture of the many health administration challenges in post-war Europe: food shortages, epidemic disease, and damaged hospitals, laboratories, and sanitation infrastructures, shortages of medical personnel, and thousands of displaced persons. He also described a visit to the Majdanek concentration camp, near Lublin, Poland.
