Even when separated for just a few weeks, Dr. and Mrs. Sawyer corresponded regularly. In 1933 Sawyer and his eldest daughter Peggy stayed home in Hastings while the rest of the family vacationed in Michigan during August. In this letter he reported on their activities and on the probable disappearance of his son Billy's pet alligator, Oscar.. Oscar turned up, unharmed, ten days later, according to a later letter.
