Representing the United States at international public health conferences is one of the responsibilities of the U.S. Surgeon General. In this speech before an assembly of the World Health Organization in Geneva, Surgeon General Koop reviewed efforts in the United States to improve health, preventive, and vaccination services, also the goal of the World Health Organization in developing countries. Koop described recent progress in the United States in health promotion and disease prevention, immunization and the containment of infectious diseases, nutrition and reduction in heart disease, and in the understanding of a new and devastating infectious disease, AIDS.
