As he did in other speeches on the aging process, gerontology, and the health of the elderly, Koop in this speech strove to change perceptions of old age as no more than a prelude to death, and instead challenged health and social service professionals to help the elderly prolong their healthful and active years, though not to prolong the act of dying.
