In this article, the Veterans Administration Cooperative Study Group reported that nadolol, a beta-blocker, and bendroflumethiazide, a diuretic, appeared to be safe and effective antihypertensive agents with minimal side effects. They noted that nadolol was more effective in white patients, while bendroflumethiazide worked better in black patients.
