Freis and Wilson reported in this article on the use of the pentolinium tartrate in severely hypertensive patients. They noted that a combination of the ganglionic-blocking agent, Rauwolfia (a tropical plant whose root was commonly used in herbal treatments), and the vasodilator hydralazine provided the greatest reduction in blood pressure with the fewest side effects.
