Specter had recently appeared on a television show about alternative medicine, where two alternative medical practitioners noted that saw palmetto (banned by FDA in 1990) wasn't included in NIH clinical trial for benign prostatic hypertrophy -- he wanted to know why not. He also wondered about a recent Washington Post article about how research by corporations stifles the exchange of scientific info. Varmus responded on May 6.
