These remarks are transcribed and are an extension of the views presented in Marshall Nirenberg's "Preliminary notes for speech given at the Lasker Awards luncheon." Nirenberg adds, "The major point is that it should be possible in the future to synthesize genetic messages and use them to program cells. It seems likely that man eventually be able to instruct his own cells, and ultimately, influence his own evolution."
