- This article describes how combinations of bases, or code letters, provide the information used by cells to construct proteins from twenty common kinds of amino acids. Nirenberg recounts recent developments in the field of genetics and illustrates the components and structure of DNA and RNA, and the process of protein synthesis. The process of breaking the code and the "dictionary" of the genetic code are also covered.
