The lecture was given on February 17, 1998. The photograph below the announcement is of a commemorative plaque in the archway of Yale University's Osborn Botanical Laboratory which reads: IN THIS BUILDING WERE PERFORMED IN 1946, THE HISTORIC EXPERIMENTS OF JOSHUA LEDERBERG. THEN A YALE GRADUATE STUDENT, AND EDWARD L. TATUM, THEN A YALE PROFESSOR, WHICH DESCRIBED FOR THE FIRST TIME THE PHENOMENON OF GENETIC RECOMBINATION IN BACTERIA. THIS FINDING, WHICH REVOLUTIONIONIZED BIO-CHEMICAL GENETICS AND HELPED TO ESTABLISH THE SCIENCE OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, LED TO A SHARED AWARD OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE AND PHYSIOLOGY IN 1958.
