Mary Lasker's passion for urban beautification had first been inspired by her mother. Lasker sponsored the planting of trees and flowers and the construction of lighting and fountains in public spaces in Washington and her home of New York, which included a donation of 300 Japanese cherry trees to be planted on the grounds of the United Nations headquarters in New York as well as thousands of tulips and begonias to spruce up the malls that run in the center of Park Avenue.. Mrs. Lasker is second from the left.
