In this 1964 essay, Apgar discussed this history of anesthesiology and described the skills and training involved in anesthesiology practice. She included a discussion of anesthesiology as a specialty for women, noting that women physicians, usually possessed of tact and diplomacy, and accustomed to team work, were well fitted for it.
