After working for over a decade on circadian rhythms and the secretions of the pineal gland, Axelrod produced a series of articles on his research. In this article, he detailed the key role of the neurotransmitter norepinepherine in the secretion of seretonin to further complete the "melatonin hypothesis" which he developed with Richard Wurtman in a 1965 article in "Scientific American."
