Avery described the four studies written with Cullen, of which this is his third, as clinically important because of the light they shed on "certain of the blood changes which occur in pneumococcal infections in man." In this article, Avery and Cullen presented the results of their research on the nature and action of invertase, amylase, and inulase, which are some of the intracellular enzymes of the pneumococcus.
