The film begins by showing a young woman undergoing an illegal abortion. This is followed by the story of a college couple of middle-class social background who are seeking an abortion because a second child would be difficult while the husband is in graduate school. They are referred to a clinic in New York for the procedure. The process of the operation is first explained to the woman in detail to allay her fears. Her reactions on the operating table are also designed to show a legal abortion can be simple and safe. After the operation she receives advice on contraceptive methods. A group discussion with women in the same situation covers the relative advantages and disadvantages of different methods.
