This film describes and documents examples of family planning and voluntary sterilization programs in Bangladesh, El Salvador, the Philippines, Thailand, and the U.S.A. The opening sequence shows doctors and nurses preparing an operating room and instruments. Dr. Malcolm Potts introduces the topic, noting that in his experience in more than 50 countries, people are interested in these options once they have the number of children they want, even when local leaders believe they will not be. The film goes on to profile efforts in several countries, with sterilization methods available for both men and women. A doctor in the Philippines displays drawings of male and female reproductive systems and explains how the different methods work. In Bangladesh, traditional birth attendants speak with women about sterilization. Dr. Angel Quan in El Salvador describes vasectomy to a large group of men. In Memphis, Tennessee, Planned Parenthood makes vasectomies available and counsels men as to the benefits and risks. In Thailand, women who hail from remote mountain tribes make a multi-day journey to the clinic, many bringing children and husbands along.
